Anatomy

The standard shank length is 2 inches long, meaning that the usable length of a drill bit is commonly the overall length, less two inches. The flute and land make up the cutting area of the bit, and the size is the diameter of the bit.

Split Point

An extra cutting angle on the 2 cutting edges of a drill bit. Split Point is designated here in black. Split Pointing is almost always reserved for 135° HSS drill bits.

Cutting Angle

118° drill bits have a sharp point that commonly causes them to “walk” or spin like a top on flat surfaces, requiring the use of a centering drill or center punch.

135° drill bits have a flatter point which gives the drill bit more cutting surface area. When more surface area cuts the steel, drilling is faster.
